Organization and management

The implementation of a sustainable development governance and management system constitutes the continuous improvement process component of this initiative. Integrating sustainable development into GDF SUEZ’s management ensures that environmental and social criteria are considered by the "business” entities in steering their activities. The mechanism relies on a system of governance, a dedicated structure, a management system and reporting tools.

Governance dedicated to sustainable development

Governance is organized around principles and a steering structure composed of authorities supported by the highest level of the Group:

  • The Committee for Ethics, the Environment and Sustainable Development is attached to the Board of Directors. It ensures that the individual and collective values on which the Group bases its actions are respected, as well as the rules of conduct that every employee must follow.
  • The Group’s Executive Committee, led by the Chairman and the CEO, make decisions on questions of sustainable development policy questions.
  • The Group’s Sustainable Development Steering Committee is made up of:
    • business lines’ Sustainable Development Managers;
    • representatives from the Sustainable Development Department;
    • representatives from functional departments (e.g.: the Human Resources Department).
  • The Steering Committee meets every six weeks. Its role is to oversee the preparation of annual action plans, follow-up on their implementation, and capitalize on the experiences of various business lines and the exchange of major sustainable development strategies (fighting climate change, social responsibility, etc.);
  • The Sustainable Development Network is made up of people involved more broadly in carrying out the Group’s Sustainable Development policy. Its meetings are held quarterly and discuss:
    • implementation of policy within the business lines and subsidiaries,
    • internal and external news about sustainable development.

Sustainable Development Department

The Sustainable Development Department is part of the Strategy and Sustainable Development Department. Its role is to manage the complete integration of sustainable development within the Group.

This department consists of three units, each with specific responsibilities:

  • Leadership and Performance:
    • Strategic planning and integration of sustainable development into corporate processes,
    • Relations with social and environmental rating agencies,
    • Investor relations,
    • Network leadership and communications.

  • Environment and Climate:
    • Preparing the Group’s positioning and strategies in this field,
    • Monitoring international negotiations and regulatory changes,
    • Managing research projects,
    • Supporting business lines’ action plans (e.g.: curbing CO2 emissions, fighting pollution, promoting biodiversity).

  • Social Responsibility:
    • Social engineering for the Group to support its business lines,
    • Following up on actions to benefit vulnerable customers and in particular programs aimed at reducing energy and water insecurity,
    • Running community projects for access to water, energy and sanitation for populations in the last developed countries,
    • Developing and managing partnerships with associations and non-governmental organizations in the sustainable development field.

A policy driven at every level of the Group

  • Within every business line, a Sustainable Development Manager, supported by a dedicated team, is in charge of:
    • Rolling out the sustainable development policy within the business line;
    • Driving the business line’s action plans,
    • Integrating a sustainable development dimension into the business line’s strategic planning process,
    • Raising awareness, and mobilizing and training all employees,
    • Capitalizing on experiences within the business line.

  • In every business line, a Sustainable Development contact ensures that its subsidiary’s action plan is implemented. For that purpose, he or she is supported by the business line’s Sustainable Development Manager and team.

  • The sustainable development initiative thus relies on an international network made up of:
    • Representatives of the Sustainable Development Department,
    • Business lines’ Sustainable Development managers and teams,
    • Various departments (Purchasing, Human Resources, Health & Safety, Communication, International Affairs, Research & Development, etc.),
    • Sustainable Development representatives from Business Units and business line subsidiaries,
    • Contact people for regional delegations in France.
