08/07/2010 - Cofely and Lyonnaise des Eaux to recover wastewater heat to warm Nanterre's eco-neighbourhood

  • A first in France: an urban network running on heat recovered from wastewater
  • 56% of the heat will be provided from local and renewable energies
  • 13,500 tonnes of CO2 emissions averted over the contract’s duration

The city of Nanterre, in Hauts-de-Seine, has just awarded GDF SUEZ group (through the Cofely – Lyonnaise des eaux grouping), a 25-year concession contract covering the design, construction and operation of a heat generation and distribution facility in the eco-neighbourhood, Centre Sainte-Geneviève1, classified an urban development zone.

Cofely, the grouping’s authorised agent, will run the neighbourhood’s heating network, the first to be run using heat from wastewater (kitchens, bathrooms, etc.).

For this purpose, Cofely will work alongside Eau et Force, the designer of the Degrés Bleus® system, used to recover heat from wastewater. Heat pumps (800 kW in total) will convert the heat from the wastewater produced by the Hauts-de-Seine Region’s sanitation system, recovered via a heat interchange system in the collector on Avenue Georges-Clémenceau. The additional heat will be produced through a shallow-groundwater geothermal system.

Cofely will also produce and run the supply sub-stations, along with the gas production plant, planned for peak and back-up needs.

Compared to a gas-based solution, the energy bouquet offered by the Cofely – Eau & Force grouping will make it possible to avert a total of 13,500 tonnes of CO2. The network, which will be more than 50% supplied with renewable energy, will also allow subscribers to enjoy reduced-rate VAT (5.5%).

Construction will begin in Second Half 2010, with the heat network to be commissioned in First Half 2011.
