24/06/2010 - Jean-Claude Depail elected President of the European Association of Infrastructure Operators
Jean-Claude Depail, a member of the Executive Committee of GDF SUEZ in charge of the Infrastructures business line, has been elected president of Gas Infrastructure Europe (GIE) by the plenary meeting of the Association on June 23, 2010 in Vienna, for a two-years term.
The GIE represents the major gas transmission companies, storage system operators and LNG terminal operators in Europe. It now has sixty-five members in twenty six countries. It aims to promote the development of natural gas in Europe and favor cross-border transmission through the work carried out in cooperation with other stakeholders.
On the occasion of his appointment, Jean-Claude Depail said:
"I am honored to have earned the confidence of the European operators to serve as president of Gas Infrastructure Europe.
I am convinced that natural gas will play a major role in the fight against climate change and the search for a less CO2-emitting economy.
With all the European companies that are part of GIE, I will work to continue the efforts of Marcel Kramer, and I commend the achievements made under his presidency.
In particular, we need to mobilize to improve the security of supply, strengthen the position of natural gas in the energy mix and develop infrastructure under investment conditions acceptable to all industrial gas companies.
We must work together to develop natural gas in a single, fluid and competitive market, with the highest level of security of supply in Europe."
GIE, established in 2005, is an independent non-profit association that represents its members with European institutions (European Commission, European Parliament, etc.).
