14/09/2009 - GDF SUEZ Rises from No. 3 Ranking to Second Largest Retail Electricity Provider in U.S.

GDF SUEZ has risen from No. 3 to be ranked as the second largest commercial and industrial energy provider by independent consulting firm KEMA, a leading firm for energy industry benchmarking and analysis.

KEMA’s rankings, analyzed through August 2009, show an estimated 15 TWh increase since August 2008, a nearly 40 percent increase in GDF SUEZ’s annualized sales.  The increase includes more than 4.8 TWh in annualized sales over the past six months.  In the 11 retail markets that GDF SUEZ operates, the company has grown to serve more than 50,000 customer accounts.

“What we have seen in the market, even more so in this challenging economic climate, is that financially solid customers are looking to do business exclusively with financially solid power providers,” explained Gérard Mestrallet, GDF SUEZ Chairman and Chief Executive Officer.  “We are proud that our growth in the retail arena in the United States has been entirely organic, self made, and a result of building our customer base one client at a time.”

GDF SUEZ currently serves commercial and industrial customers in 11 U.S. markets: Delaware, Texas, Massachusetts, Maine, Maryland, New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Illinois, Connecticut, and Washington, D.C.  The company serves more than 50,000 customer accounts, mainly with commercial and industrial customers having peak demands ranging from 50 KW to more than 200 MW, for a total contracted load of 7,150 MW.
