Rassembleurs d'Energie

Twenty per cent of the world's population does not have access to electricity, and more than one in every four people in Europe faces energy poverty. Access to energy, an essential service, is therefore at the heart of the fight against poverty. With GDF SUEZ Rassembleurs d'Energies, the Group is using its industrial know-how to contribute to providing access to energy for everyone.

GDF SUEZ Rassembleurs d'Energies goals

The Group wants to create a unifying dynamic for populations that are in situations of energy poverty in Europe and throughout the world. The objectives behind Rassembleurs d'Energies are:

  • to help improve energy access for poor populations, in emerging or developing countries;
  • to reduce energy poverty in developed countries;
  • to move towards a low-carbon economy through access to renewable energy projects in developing countries and energy control projects in developed countries;
  • to support managers of social projects and non-governmental organizations (NGOs).

A dynamic based on the Group's core activities

As the world's leading utility company (supplier of electricity, natural gas, energy services and environmental services), GDF SUEZ is devotes using its industrial performance expertise to further the service of its socialhumanitarian ambitionobjectives. To do this, the Group relies on two areas of expertise:

  • Energy: connecting territories to energy sources with low CO2 emissions,
  • Energy services: helping populations optimize their energy consumption.

Getting involved

GDF SUEZ Rassembleurs d'Energies proposes three types of contribution:

  • Investment,
  • Technical assistance through skills donation,
  • Financial donations.

Energy access projects vary and, depending on their characteristics, can require the use of one or more of these aid methods. Each can be used on its own or in conjunction with the other types of aid, depending on the various phases of the project.

Investment

Energy access projects often require substantial investment. To fulfill this requirement, GDF SUEZ is creating a socially responsible investment fund, which will invest in sustainable energy access projects for poor populations through a socially responsible investment company. This fund aims to invest in economically viable projects with a humanitarian purpose, run by committed social entrepreneurs.

Technical assistance through skills donation

This draws on the expertise and skills of the Group's employees. Technical and managerial assistance can be provided for any type of project supported by GDF SUEZ Rassembleurs d'Energies in its design or development phase.

GDF SUEZ Rassembleurs d'Energies offers two main ways for Group employees to get involved with the selected social entrepreneurs:

  • One-off technical missions lasting a few days
  • Longer-term missions, lasting more than six months

Donation

The donations element of GDF SUEZ Rassembleurs d'Energies calls upon the “Energies Solidaires” program of the GDF SUEZ Foundation. This program supports projects of general interest run bycharities, NGOs or Group employees. These projects seek to promote access to sustainable energy for poor populations and those in situations of energy poverty.

Friendship NGO: bringing electricity of river areas in Bangladesh

Established in Bangladesh in 1998, the Friendship NGO seeks to provide essential services to the poorest and most marginalized populations in the country. Run by Runa Khan, an emblematic figure of social entrepreneurship in Bangladesh, Friendship is working with the GDF SUEZ Foundation and volunteer experts from Energy Assistance on a project to bring electricity to island villages through technical solutions adapted to those isolated regions.

Implementing sustainable energy solutions in Peru with Energy Assistance

For three years, Energy Assistance France has drawn on the skills of GDF SUEZ employees to supply photovoltaic and micro-hydraulic energy to about twenty isolated villages, on the Brazilian border of Peru. After a field mission that identified local needs and resources, Energy Assistance France supplied cocoa farmers in the villages of Pucalpillo and Santa Rosa with rechargeable solar-powered lamps.
