Women's tennis, a longstanding partnership

Since 1992, GDF SUEZ has implemented an active policy of sponsoring women’s tennis. From developing major tennis tournaments to assisting top players, the Group has made a significant contribution to the rapid growth and promotion of this highly popular, sociable sport.

A partner in major tennis events

As a partner in women’s tennis, GDF SUEZ has worked together with the French Tennis Federation (FFT) and France’s Fed Cup team since 1992. The Group supports its partnership with the FFT by sponsoring 14 regional leagues.

Creator and sponsor of major women’s tennis events

Am__lie_Mauresmo.jpgThe GDF SUEZ Open in Paris, established in 1993, has become the largest women’s tennis event in France after the French Open at Roland-Garros. The tournament is now one of the Premier Tournaments of the Women's Tennis Association (WTA), which include the most important women’s tennis tournaments in the world after the Grand Slams. The GDF SUEZ Open has been the site of the triumphs of some of the greatest players in tennis history (including Martina Navrátilová, Steffi Graf, Martina Hingis, and Serena Williams), as well as the best French players (Amélie Mauresmo, Julie Halard-Decugis, Mary Pierce, and Nathalie Tauziat).

GDF SUEZ also organizes about thirty international women’s tennis tournaments, 17 of which are under the “GDF SUEZ Open” name.

In Belgium, the Group has helped to bring a top tennis event back to Belgium by becoming the leading sponsor of Belgium’s premier women’s tournament, the “Brussels Open by GDF SUEZ”.

Assisting top players

The Group has created “Team Tennis”, a women’s team that now has 8 players from 4 countries (France, Belgium, Hungary and Romania): Sorana Cirstea, Alizé Cornet, Caroline Garcia, Tatiana Golovin, An-Sophie Mestach, Virginie Razzano, Aravane Rezaï and Agnès Szavay.

From the first steps all the way to the winner’s podiums, from training to professional career development, GDF SUEZ is constantly behind these top-level players. Thus, Amélie Mauresmo, Nathalie Dechy and Emilie Loit, who all retired from the courts at a very young age, are continuing their collaboration with the Group, which began more than ten years ago, by participating in days of public relations events.

GDF SUEZ also helps in the training of talented young hopefuls. For example, every year it sponsors thirty scholarships granted by the French Tennis Federation, through a financial grant that supports motivational activities, such as meetings and conversations with the team’s renowned athletes.

"Fête le Mur": social integration through tennis
GDF SUEZ is a partner of the "Fête le Mur" association. Its mission is to convey a passion for tennis and help children thrive in the sport and find their own place in society.
