Solidarity is one of the Group’s core concerns. In line with being fully a part of its local communities, solidarity is expressed primarily through actions that help children in need and disadvantaged populations, and through sponsoring young entrepreneurs.

Taking action to reduce inequality
As part of its commitment to combating exclusion and poverty, GDF SUEZ has teamed up with SAMU Social de Paris since 1998. The Group provides special support for night-time outreach actions in which employees can take part.
Supporting the creation and development of young businesses
GDF SUEZ supports the initiatives of young entrepreneurs and the development of microcredit through associations that are involved in France and abroad. Through the Talents des Cités contest, for the past ten years the Group has sponsored a young entrepreneur who creates or grows a company in one of the Group’s business segments.
Supporting entrepreneurs through microcredit with PlaNet Finance
Through its partnership with PlaNet Finance, GDF SUEZ encourages international solidarity initiatives by developing microfinance in order to improve access to financial services for impoverished populations. In 2011, GDF SUEZ partnered with PlaNet Finance in several actions:
- "Microfinance & Energy": a program designed to support the development, and the access to and sustainable use of renewable energy for at-risk population groups in urban and rural areas.
- "Entreprendre en banlieue" (Business in the Suburbs) a program designed to make unemployed adults from sensitive urban areas (ZUS) aware of entrepreneurship by creating ADAMs (micro-entrepreneur awareness and support associations) in these districts.
- FinanCités, a venture-capital company which supports micro-businesses in urban districts by providing them with additional financing at a crucial stage in their development.
- "MicroWorld": A plan to develop a European solidarity microcredit platform on the internet. MicroWorld aims to develop financing for micro-entrepreneurs throughout the world in the form of loans through the internet.

At this event, awards were given to outstanding micro-entrepreneurs from all over the world for their ambitious and inspirational projects. Eight micro-entrepreneurs were recognized for their work. GDF SUEZ awarded the “Environment” prize to Rabi Hinsa of Niger for his company that manufactures soap from recycled ingredients. |
Fostering access to culture for everyone
GDF SUEZ seeks to enable as many people as possible to discover culture by including in its cultural patronage activities that appeal to a younger audience, such as the initiative with the Opéra de Paris to reach children and a broad general audience with this form of culture.
