Partner in the first zero-emissions science station

The fight against global warming, protection of resources, sustainable development: Through its energy and environment businesses, GDF SUEZ plays a central role in these challenges. As a partner in the Princess Elisabeth Polar Station since 2007 through its contribution of skills, the Group has provided its expertise for research and thus contributed to making as many people as possible aware of global warming.

As part of the International Polar Year 2007-2008, GDF SUEZ, its subsidiary Electrabel, and its Laborelec research laboratory wanted to be partners in this project, as they were convinced of the solid foundation of the project, which uses polar research as a source to understand climatic and environmental processes.

A partnership based on skills

After four years of preliminary studies and several expeditions, the building of the Princess Elisabeth Polar Station, a project led by the International Polar Foundation, began in November 2007 and was finished in February 2009.

GDF SUEZ, its subsidiary Electrabel, and its Laborelec research laboratory, along with the International Polar Foundation and its chairman, the explorer Alain Hubert, began a skills sponsorship in the areas of energy, water, and waste management to construct the station.

A zero-emissions polar station

Perched atop a summit of granite some 1,400 meters in altitude in Queen Maud Land, the Princess Elisabeth Polar Station was set up in an uninhabited area of 1,500 km2, far from any electrical network.

Laborelec and Electrabel contributed all of their expertise to an enormous challenge: The design of a zero carbon emissions polar station that would function solely with renewable energies to limit its carbon footprint as much as possible.

To this end, the energy used by the station is obtained from windmills and solar panels. Its passive heating and waste water recycling system, as well as its use of low-energy appliances, make it a particularly energy efficient station.

GDF SUEZ and its subsidiaries demonstrate their commitment to find innovative and diverse solutions as part of their sustainable development policy.
