Two foundations, one socially conscious company

For over 15 years, GDF SUEZ has been conducting acts of social consciousness through its two truly complementary foundations.

The Fondation d’Entreprise Gaz de France and the Fondation Suez were created in 1992 and are among the first entities of their kind in France. Their interest lies in areas of life important to us all: solidarity, children, cultural heritage, and the environment. They are involved in projects both modest and ambitious, in France and worldwide, that are aimed at populations in need.

Helping children in distress

It is the vocation of the Fondation SUEZ, which was created under the aegis of the Fondation de France, to help children in distress. This help is given to three main groups of children in France and in countries where the Group is located: sick children, children affected by AIDS, and children in great economic need.

In 15 years, the Fondation SUEZ has given long-term support to several actions to help sick children and youth and make their hospital stays more bearable and provide easier access to recreation. It has been a partner with the association “Le Rire médecin, de vrais clowns à l’hôpital” for ten years, and with “l’Enfant à l’Hôpital” and “L’Envol pour les enfants européens”, and with the association “HOP’ART” at the Institut Curie. It is active on behalf of children infected with, or orphaned by AIDS through the associations “Enfants du Mékong” in Thailand, “François-Xavier Bagnoud” in South Africa, and “Associaçao de Apoio a Criança com HIV” in Brazil. It has given aid to children in great economic need: children living on the streets or in slums and minors in danger in several countries, especially in Morocco with the association BAYTI, in South Africa with “The Valued Citizens Initiative”, in Brazil, where it has been a partner for ten years with “Solidariedade França-Brasil”, and in Mexico, with the association EDNICA.

More recently, it has become involved in educational actions in France to help children from the poorest of neighbourhoods, with the “Association pour favoriser une Ecole Efficace” and the association “J’ai un rêve”.

Against child labour
Since 2007, the Fondation SUEZ has supported the project “Des enfants loin du travail et de la rue”, which is conducted by the Mexican association EDNICA and is directed at children in the Xochimilco community south of Mexico City.

This project has made it possible to create a new welcome and counselling center in this area to help marginalized Mexican children and youth overcome their difficulties and find an alternative to living on the streets.

Encourage solidarity, promote respect for the environment, and protect cultural heritage

The work of the Fondation Gaz de France can be divided into three categories:

  • Fighting the social exclusion of youth: The foundation helps young people become integrated into society by supporting associations that work with them on a daily basis, especially through sports;
  • Respecting and protecting the environment: The foundation preserves and protects gardens and exceptional natural sites;
  • Preserving cultural heritage: The foundation is actively involved in the restoration of stained glass windows, an essential part of France’s cultural heritage. It also supports contemporary artists who specialize in glass.

The stained glass windows of Villenauxe-la-Grande
The Fondation Gaz de France supported the creation and production of the stained glass windows in the Saint-Pierre Saint-Paul church in Villenauxe-la-Grande. They were produced by renowned glass artist David Tremlett and unveiled on 24 October 2005. This exceptional work of art, which was the largest stained glass project in France for over 20 years, filled all 24 windows of the church, an area of over 200 m².
