The environment

GDF SUEZ incorporates environmental responsibility in all of its activities by taking into account important issues such as climate change, preservation of resources, and the quality of life of populations and future generations. The Group’s patronage policy reinforces this commitment by giving its support to concrete actions in these areas.

Raising the awareness of the general public and preserving biodiversity

Fleur Australe: the Antarctic expedition

Fleur Australe expedition logoThe Fleur Australe is a marine expedition that aims to alert the general public to the consequences of global warming on the oceans and shoreline.

Given the seal of approval by the Explorers’ Club of the Grenelle de la Mer (Think Tank on the Oceans) set up in May 2010 by the Ministry of Ecology, Energy, Sustainable Development and the Sea, this project contributes to:

  • assessing the condition of the oceans and their flora and fauna through close observation,
  • making all groups (i.e. general public, industry and governments) aware of the harm of pollution and global warming to the environment (e.g. melting of ice, desalinization of oceans, etc.),
  • providing education on sustainable development to enable future generations to think about what they can do on a day to day basis to be more civic-minded in terms of the environment.

The boat (Fleur Australe), which set off from Alaska in June 2010, will sail through rarely navigated areas in the Pacific where the impact of global warming will be most acute (with waters projected to rise) before reaching the Antarctic in 2012, where it will spend a full year.

Led by French sailor Philippe Poupon, the expedition will be made in a 20 meter long sailboat specially designed for navigation and marine observation in all latitudes.

GDF SUEZ will provide logistical support to the Fleur Australe expedition at every port of call where the Group has a presence (Polynesia, Australia, Antarctica, etc.). The expedition will also be provided with advice and resources from some of the Group’s scientific partners, including Université de la Rochelle and IUCN (International Union for the Conservation of Nature).

52 things to do to promote biodiversity

52 things to do for biodiversityFor the International Year of Biodiversity, GDF SUEZ teamed up with the Belgian Royal Institute of Natural Sciences to publish “52 things to do for biodiversity”, a publication including simple, creative and educational advice teaching the reader how to protect nature’s riches.

These 52 things to do were selected by the European Commission for its “We’re all in the same boat” campaign, and distributed at the 10th conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity in Nagoya, Japan from October 18 to 25, 2010.

Promoting civic responsibility with the Fondation du Football

Fondation du FootballWith 2.3 million members, 18,000 amateur clubs and over a million matches played each year in France alone, soccer is a popular sport in every sense of the word and can mobilize people’s energy as a unifying force.

GDF SUEZ is a founding member of the Fondation du Football, which was created in February 2008 at the behest of the Fédération Française de Football, with the aim of fostering a civic-minded view of soccer and reminding us all of its educational virtues, including respect, tolerance, fraternity and solidarity. To accomplish its mission, the Fondation du Football draws on community life and seeks out, encourages, and supports the implementation of social and educational initiatives within the clubs.

GDF SUEZ supports the Fondation du Football by providing it with its expertise and skills to meet the challenges of respect for the environment and, more broadly, civic responsibility. The Group:

  • participates in encouraging environmentally responsible behavior and practices in the clubs and in daily life,
  • fosters the emergence and permanent establishment of a genuine environmental sports policy developed by and for young soccer players.

Through “green tournaments”, awareness raising meetings, and even the organization of environmental games, the emphasis is placed on new consumer habits, waste management, promotion of “green” transport, use of renewable materials and, above all, control of energy consumption.

Preserving the environment by preserving our heritage

Royaumont AbbeyFor the past ten years, GDF SUEZ has been working to preserve our heritage and make it accessible to all, a major focus of its patronage policy.

GDF SUEZ is a patron of the Royaumont Abbey, and more specifically of its cloistered garden, an outstanding heritage site.

Royaumont Abbey (Val d’Oise) represents the art of the medieval garden in an environmental setting created nearly 800 years ago by Cistercian monks.

The garden was inaugurated on June 26, 2010, in the presence of Joël Grégoire, Deputy Director, Ile-de-France.

By supporting the restoration of the cloistered garden at Royaumont, the Group is illustrating its commitment to protecting biodiversity and gardens, those ideal places for demonstrating sustainable development through biodiversity, teaching, culture and creativity.
