    Acting to respect the environment

The Group is facing enormous challenges. To meet all of our energy needs in an effective manner, GDF SUEZ has to take into account several major challenges, such as the fight against climate change, the preservation of resources, and the quality of life of populations, both now and in the generations to come.

Proposing innovative solutions to meet environmental challenges

The Princess Elisabeth Polar Station project began in 2004, when the Belgian Government entrusted the Fondation Polaire Internationale with the task of designing a new research platform in Antarctica.

In 2007, GDF SUEZ, its subsidiary Electrabel, and its Laborelec research laboratory, along with the Fondation Polaire Internationale and its chairman, the explorer Alain Hubert, began a skills sponsorship in the areas of energy, water, and waste management to construct the station.

Laborelec and Electrabel contributed all of their expertise to a large-scale challenge: the design of a zero-emissions polar station that runs exclusively on renewable energies to limit its carbon footprint as much as possible.

Make younger generations aware of environmental protection

It is the mission of Good Planet, which was created by photographer Yann Arthus-Bertrand, to make young people aware of the challenges of sustainable development. GDF SUEZ, which plays a concrete role on a daily basis to expand everyone’s awareness of energy challenges, is a partner in this association, which is resolutely focused on future generations.

In 2008, over 57,000 schools in France (primary and lower and upper secondary) received free kits to create exhibitions based on environmental themes. The theme for 2008 was “Energy: What are the choices for Tomorrow”.

The goal of the Fondation du Football, through its operation “Respect tous terrains” (“Respect All Fields”) is to make amateur soccer clubs in France aware of a civic program that offers activities developed by the Foundation and its partners, as well as test programs in some of those clubs. As regards the environmental aspect, GDF SUEZ has participated in the development of messages and advice to promote eco-friendly behaviours, especially through its green program, which suggests such messages as: “Everything we do may have a favourable impact on the environment. You can do these things every day at your club or at home. The planet needs you!”

    Respecting and preserving nature

Through its foundation, GDF SUEZ contributes to the preservation of symbolic natural sites and supports the restoration of roads and paths. The numerous projects it supports include the rehabilitation of La Pointe du Raz and the development of a hiking path through the entire Jura Mountain chain.

Restoring and creating gardens. Through its foundation, GDF SUEZ supports projects that contribute to the preservation, creation, and protection of exceptional gardens. These gardens are oases of serenity where one can relax and socialize in a convivial manner. They represent a unique concentration of the ideas behind sustainable development, such as biodiversity, teaching, culture, and creation. The projects it supports include the creation of the gardens of the Musée du Quai Branly and part of the restoration of the gardens at the Palace of Versailles.

    Courson Flower Show

The Courson Flower Show take place at the Domaine de Courson in Essonne (91). This bi-annual event held in spring and autumn has been supported by the Group Foundation for the last eight years. This year is set to be another great success, with nearly 30,000 visitors this spring alone. This exhibition and sale is a perfect opportunity to discover little-known plants, and to find out about developments and practices in gardening.

Numerous prizes are awarded during both the spring and autumn events by an international panel of experts to encourage the development and display of original plants, respecting environmental constraints.

The GDF SUEZ Group is committed to the preservation of the environment and action in favor of biodiversity; the Foundation takes this commitment further by supporting initiatives of garden creation, rehabilitation and enhancement.

In 2010, the Group Foundation is also supporting:

    • the "Rendez-vous aux jardins" organized by the French Culture Ministry, which provides an opportunity for visitors to enjoy public and private gardens specially opened for this occasion,
    • the "Prix Micro Environnement National Geographic Channel", which rewards action taken in favor of the protection of flora and fauna.

All these events enable the general public to discover nature and become more aware of the need for respect for the environment.
