Nuclear safety

For GDF SUEZ, nuclear safety is a major challenge. In 2010, the Doel power plant confirmed its high performance level in terms of nuclear safety by successfully passing the OSART (Operational Safety Review Team) audit of the IAEA (International Atomic Energy Agency). The follow-up audit of the Doel plant in early March 2012 gave a favorable assessment of the progress toward implementing recommendations and carrying out corrective measures. The OSART experts emphasized that the Nuclear Safety of facilities is one of the Group’s major priorities.

Other external experts, in particular those from WANO (World Association of Nuclear Operators), acknowledged the efforts made. These efforts are expressed by very real improvements in terms of operational safety, thanks to experience feedback, training, processes for monitoring system performance etc.

All these external assessments feed the process of continued improvement put in place by GDF SUEZ with a view to demonstrating once more the Group’s operational excellence in Nuclear Safety during the next OSART Follow-up (at Doel in 2012) and WANO Review (at Tihange in 2011).

 

Based on these reports, AFCN concluded that the Belgian nuclear power plants have a sufficiently high protection level. Projected results show that the power plants are not only sufficiently resilient to resist the extreme conditions provided for in the tests – even in the event of several circumstances occurring at the same time – but furthermore some facilities have an additional safety margin.
Electrabel is also proposing an action plan for strengthening facilities’ safety even more.

In its analysis, AFCN recommends a further strengthening of safety margins, or introducing them where appropriate.
Electrabel will give its full cooperation to AFCN over the coming stages of the procedure. In particular, it will work with AFCN on finalizing and implementing the proposed action plan. The company will take all necessary steps to continue to guarantee operation of the units concerned in complete safety.

Storengy is deploying a “Targeting Project Safety” initiative in conjunction with outside companies

Within the context of projects for renovating and developing storage sites, Storengy put in place with outside companies a specific “Cap Securité Projects” process for targeting project safety. This approach aims at bringing together in a long-lasting and participative way all players intervening at storage sites on prevention and safety matters, thus reducing the number of incidents and accidents.

The Energy Services business line is reinforcing the safety of numerous dams in French Polynesia

The MARAMA NUI dams in French Polynesia, and the associated electricity generation plants, managed by subsidiaries dependent on the Energy Services business line, were in 2010 the subject of modernization work to strengthen facility safety levels. This work continued in 2011.

Remarkable safety record in Bahrain

On May 21, 2012, Al Ezzel O&M (Bahrain) achieved a significant safety milestone of 2,500 days, or the equivalent of seven years, of accident-free operations and maintenance at the Al Ezzel power plant. Out of all combined cycle plants in META, Al Ezzel is #1 in health and safety.

Two awards recognizing health and safety in Chile

GNL Mejillones (GNLM) received two awards from the Chilean Safety Association (ACHS): the first for achieving four years of zero lost-time accidents, and the second for the GNLM management team’s sustained commitment to the health and safety of the company’s workers and sub-contractors.

A new safety passport for the Roselectra power plant in Italy

In 2010, the Roselectra power plant in Tuscany (435 MW) underwent an enhanced general overhaul to further increase the facility’s safety level. This operation ran for two months, involving 51 different subcontractors and 231 employees.

Safety on the Gjøa platform

Safety is a daily concern on the Gjøa platform in the North Sea. To able to work there, employees must complete the training BOSIET, survival training at sea offshore. The platform is equipped with safety equipment to prevent accidents, and exercises are organized every week to test the reactivity of the team.
