    Controlling the Legionella risk

Legionella, present naturally in water (in lakes and rivers) is a bacterium which can proliferate in certain of the installations that we operate.Temperatures of between 25 and 42 °C, the presence of nutrients, poor water circulation with areas of stagnation, are conditions that encourage its proliferation.
The facilities most affected by legionella risk are interior hot and cold water installations equipped with showers, and wet cooling systems.
    The
GDF SUEZ’s R&D team has developed, since the early 2000s, real expertise in risk management which is placed at the service of operators and technicians but also GDF SUEZ group customers.

    Evaluation of products and procedures

Following requests from suppliers and operators, the Group’s R&D team evaluates, on-site in the majority of cases, certain innovative market products or procedures and provides its expert advice.

    Development of innovative solutions

By participating in ambitious research projects, particularly in the framework of competitiveness clusters, especially the Légiorisk project aimed at developing a system for monitoring and ongoing analysis of the bacterium. The Group’s R&D team contributes to the development of tools that will significantly reduce the likelihood of Legionella risk in potentially affected installations.

    Increasing and propagating knowledge

Through a technology watch in a number of areas (water treatment, chemistry, microbiology etc.), integration in a certain number of networks and participation in research projects in numerous fields, the Group’s R&D team gathers, analyzes, updates and constantly increases its knowledge of the Legionella bacterium and possible solutions to limit its proliferation in its facilities.

All scientific, regulatory and technical knowledge is centralized in a database available to operators. Different training modules designed for various audiences are integrated in the database.
