The future with solar energy

Every year, solar energy produces more than 20 times the world’s energy needs. Yet, it only accounts for 1% of global electric production capacities. The objective of GDF SUEZ? To take all measures to increase the share of this clean, renewable energy in its energy mix, by being active across the entire value chain: from research to the construction and set-up of facilities.

Solar energy, an extraordinary energy source

Solar energy, produced by the radiation of the sun on the earth, is a natural, inexhaustible source of totally green energy.

For its capture, two different techniques are used:

  • Solar panels which transform the sun’s rays into heat. This heat is then distributed through a water-circulation or air- circulation system. This is known as “solar thermal energy”. In the less sunny periods of the year, its use can be supplemented by other energy sources (natural gas, electricity, wood, etc.),
  • Photovoltaic cells, combined in a solar panel, which transform the energy into electric current. This current is then used locally by the building having produced it or transmitted to the mains network. This is known as “solar photovoltaic energy”.
Did you know ?
A solar thermal system can cover up to 70% of a household’s hot water needs and 40% of its heating needs!

Its advantages? As solar energy is inexhaustible and clean, it helps to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Along with a supplementary energy source such as natural gas, it allows for optimal management of energy consumption peaks. Moreover, solar installations require very little upkeep and are therefore particularly economical to use.

GDF SUEZ on all solar energy fronts

pho00061762_v2.jpgThe characteristics of solar energy make it an essential component of GDF SUEZ’s energy mix. In fact, GDF SUEZ develops innovative and efficient solutions with concrete offers aimed at individual and business customers.

Along with Total, GDF SUEZ holds a subsidiary called Photovoltech, which produces photovoltaic cells in Belgium, and is contemplating the set-up of other joint sites for the manufacture of components for the photovoltaic industry.

Today, GDF SUEZ customers can opt for solar energy solutions: Gaz de France’s DolceVita offers for the general public, and Provalys for businesses include solar comfort solutions (thermal and photovoltaic energy).
