In a tense energy market, GDF SUEZ can count on the diversity of its means of production. With energy sources including renewable energies, nuclear energy and fossil energies, the Group has a well-balanced, enduring energy mix.
Demand for electricity is growing, natural resources are becoming scarcer, and the production areas are farther and farther away from the places where they are consumed.
In response to that, the Group has a high-performance production fleet combined with a gas supply portfolio that is among the most diversified in the world. That energy mix allows us to take advantage of the convergence between gas and electricity and thereby spread the risks involved in energy procurement.
With this growing demand, two energies are set to play a key role for a long time to come with regards to achieving the new objectives of reducing greenhouse gas emissions: nuclear energy and natural gas.
Nuclear energy is a readily-available and efficient solution to produce a large amount of energy with very low emissions of CO2. It will remain one of the basic components of future no-emission technologies, along with renewable energies and the capture and storage of CO2, once these have reached technical and economic maturity. As for natural gas, it is the least polluting fossil fuel. It makes it possible, by combining it with renewable energies and by using it as a replacement for other fossil fuels for various uses (heating, transport), to significantly reduce the CO2, content of the energy mix.
In parallel and in addition to this, GDF SUEZ is focusing on the development of new production capacities, favouring the most efficient solutions and those which emit the least CO2 such as hydraulics, supercritical coal and renewable energies (wind power, biomass, solar energy and biogas).
