Fuel oil: firing power plants

Fuel oil is a fossil fuel derived from oil refining. Besides domestic fuel used in transportation and household heating, heavy fuel oil (also called HFO) is used in electricity production, industry and ship engines.

Uses of heavy fuel oil (HFO)

In the energy sector, heavy fuel oil is used to fire power plants. HFO serves as:

  • fuel for lighting up gas-fired power plant;
  • “backup” fuel to adjust electricity production at peak periods, as HFO offers availability and light-up speed;
  • the main fuel in some power plants.

Modernization of uses

The development of new technologies enables a steady improvement in the quality of heavy fuel oil, with the aim of saving energy and preserving the environment.

To meet its sustainable development objectives, the Group and its subsidiaries are striving to modernize their power plants, by combining several fuels, particularly biomass.
