Natural gas and LNG

GDF SUEZ is a major gas player in Europe, active across the entire value chain: No. 1 for gas purchases, No. 1 for the management of transmission and distribution networks, No. 2 storage operator and No.1 for Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG). With 16 million customers in Europe, including 11 million in France, the Group is Europe’s leading gas player.

Natural gas, a distinctive fossil energy

GlobalGaz_GNL_img1_222x108.JPGLike oil and coal, natural gas stems from the natural transformation of organic matter into gas, but with the significant distinctive feature of being the least polluting fossil fuel.

In 2009, natural gas accounted for 54% of the Group’s capacities and 50% of its electricity production. By focusing on the most efficient technologies producing the highest yields (combined gas steam cycles), GDF SUEZ further improves the energy and environmental efficiency of its facilities.

In 2008, GDF SUEZ acquired Europe’s most powerful combined cycle power plant located in Teesside (England) and producing 1,875 MW.

Essential energy in the global energy mix

The share of gas in the global energy mix has been growing steadily since the 1970’s.

  • It accounts for over 20% of global energy consumption.
  • Global demand has been increasing by an average of 2.5% a year for the past 10 years.
  • The International Energy Agency is expecting consumption to double by 2030.

Natural gas is a non-renewable resource whose reserves are unevenly distributed across the world: two thirds are located in Russia and the Middle East. Ensuring the security of supply, transport and storage conditions is therefor an absolute priority for GDF SUEZ.

A less known but equally efficient use of natural gas is as fuel for motor vehicles: NGV

Transported by sea in purpose-designed tankers, LNG is the ideal solution to exploit fields located on other continents where gas pipelines are impossible to build. When LNG arrives at the LNG terminals, it is stored, regasified, and then sent into the natural gas transmission network.
