Coal is a fossil energy resource used for combustion fuel in thermal power plants. GDF SUEZ is modernizing the use of this energy resource to improve both yield and carbon emissions.

Coal is found in abundance in nearly every part of the world and for some countries is an essential source of energy. Even today, it is the origin of more than 40% of the world’s electricity production and experts predict that its use in the world’s electrical power production will double by 2025.
GDF SUEZ uses coal as a combustion fuel for electrical power production in thermal power plants in Belgium, the Netherlands, Poland, Germany, Portugal, Italy, United Kingdom, Indonesia, Australia, Chili, Brazil and the United States.
The combustion of coal releases a large amount of CO2: it is essential that we find innovative solutions to limit the environmental impact of this fuel resource.
GDF SUEZ is using its expertise to improve the carbon emissions of its coal-fired thermal power plants:
Plants currently under construction in Germany and the Netherlands have therefore been designed to recover and store the CO2 released by carbon combustion.
The new coal-fired plant projects launched by the Group also use latest-generation "supercritical" technologies, which make it possible to obtain a higher yield of electrical power from a lower consumption of coal.
