LNG Terminals

LNG terminals are facilities that receive shipments of liquefied natural gas transported by ship, which is then regasified and reinjected into the transport network. GDF SUEZ is the world leader in LNG and the number two LNG terminal operator in Europe.

Facilities available to all suppliers

European legislation mandates managers of infrastructures such as LNG terminals to make their facilities available to all suppliers in the marketplace.

GDF SUEZ consequently makes the following terminals available to energy suppliers:

  • The Fos-Tonkin LNG terminal with a LNG capacity of 5.5 Gm3/yr
  • The Montoir-de-Bretagne LNG terminal with a LNG capacity of 10 Gm3/yr
  • The Fos-Cavaou LNG terminal, to come online at the end of 2009, with a LNG capacity of 8,25 Gm3/yr.

LNG, a major strategic element and challenge

LNG represents for the Group, as it does for all world class energy players, a major strategic element: it is the ideal solution for working pools located in faraway areas where it has proven impossible to build a gas pipeline. LNG thus contributes to the diversification and safety of supplies of natural gas in Europe.

Elengy, a subsidiary focused on LNG terminals
In December 2008, LNG terminal activities in France of GDF SUEZ were turned over to a new subsidiary: Elengy.

Elengy is in charge of operating and developing the Group’s LNG terminals in France: Fos-Tonkin and Montoir-de Bretagne, and Fos-Cavaou.

Elengy’s mission is to:
  • Operate and keep up the Group’s LNG terminals
  • Sell the access services for the Montoir-de-Bretagne, Fos-Tonkin and Fos-Cavaou terminals
  • Ensure the development of LNG terminals
  • Make its LNG expertise available to GDF SUEZ for the development of international projects
