Manager of the No. 1 energy network in Europe, GDF SUEZ is pursuing the development of this network and is working on the harmonization of rules and practices to facilitate the interconnection of European networks.

Managing networks and ensuring their safety
The gas transport and electricity transmission business brings together various missions:
- transport/transmission network management (gas pipelines and compression stations for natural gas, and high voltage lines for electricity, for example)
- routing the energy at the request of the shippers to the distribution networks, or to industrial customers
- connecting and delivering energy (to distribution networks, to industrial customers connected directly to the transport network or transmission grid
- network/grid security (upkeep, maintenance, inspection and rehabilitation, among other activities).
GDF SUEZ, a major European player in gas transport
The GDF SUEZ Group has the largest gas transport network in Europe. The network is managed by specialized subsidiaries in France, Germany,Austria, Spain and Slovakia.
This network primarily consists of:
- 32,200 km of French infrastructure managed by GRTgaz, a wholly owned subsidiary of the Group,
- infrastructure in Spain (Medgaz), Germany (Megal), Austria (BOG) and Slovakia (Eustream), through investments made by the Group.
In 2010, 60.2 billion cubic meters of gas were transported through the French network.
Continuous network extension and improvement
The Group plans to increase transport capacity to respond to the growing natural gas market but also to connect new combined-cycle power plants and new LNG terminals to it. The development projects undertaken by GRTgaz represent investments of approximately €3 billion between 2010 and 2019.
