Energy distribution

Distribution networks enable routing of energy (natural gas and electricity) to the end consumer. GDF SUEZ builds, maintains and operates a major distribution network in France and internationally with constant concern for reliability and security.

Gas distribution networks are structures that are mainly made up of medium- or low-pressure pipelines. Their role is to route natural gas to end consumers.

GDF SUEZ has the largest natural gas distribution network in Europe.

In France, the Group manages 192,202 km of network through its GrDF subsidiary, that is in charge of its maintenance, operation and development.

European regulations call for energy supplying activities to be legally separate from network management. To this end, GDF SUEZ set up Gaz Réseau Distribution de France (GrDF), a wholly-owned subsidiary on 1 January 2008, to manage the 192,202 km gas distribution network in France.
GrDF serves some 9,423 communes, or administrative districts, in France, representing almost 77% of the population.

In a context where markets are open to competition, GrDF provides all natural gas suppliers (26 suppliers in 2011) access to the distribution network. It provides them the best service by making distribution capacity available to them and providing them with the information needed for servicing their customers.

The Group’s goal: Make this network denser to keep up with the growing demand and guarantee an optimum level of security.

Outside of France, GDF SUEZ has stakes in almost 100,000 km of the networks of other gas operators.

  • 15,428 km of gas transmission network and distribution lines outside Europe,
  • 6 gas distribution companies in Mexico,
  • 16,600 km of distribution network in Romania (Distrigaz Sud Retele) and 22,935 km of distribution network in Hungary (Égáz-Dégáz Földgázelosztó),
  • 15,330 km of distribution network in Italy (G6 Rete Gas),
  • a presence in Slovakia (SPP),  Argentina (Litoral Gas) and Peru (TGP), through investments,
  • 1 gas transportation and distribution company in Thailand (PTTNGD).
