Energy procurement and trading

In the face of increasingly scarce natural resources, GDF SUEZ has an efficient energy mix matched to a gas procurement portfolio that is one of the most diversified in the world, to guarantee a long-term secure supply of energy to its customers in Europe and in the rest of the world.

The energy procurement and trading business

To guarantee that all its customers receive power that is efficient and economical, GDF SUEZ, through its energy trading and procurement activities, negotiates gas and electricity around the world to obtain the best prices.

With strong partnerships dating back several decades, GDF SUEZ intends to remain a major gas and electricity buyer from major producers, and, in particular, through renewals of, and better terms for, long-term contracts, such as those entered into with Gazprom in 2006 or Sonatrach in 2007.

To guarantee a secure supply of gas to its customers, GDF SUEZ:
  • has the most diversified procurement portfolio in Europe with a major portion of it in LNG (liquefied natural gas accounts for 20% of its supply procurement),
  • uses long-term contract to cover the Group’s basic needs,
  • optimizes its procurement portfolio through short- and medium-term purchases/sales on European markets, uses flexible terms in its contracts and owns transport and storage infrastructure capacities,
  • handles the logistics of moving gas from the receiving to the delivery point,
  • trades and contracts for additional supplies from gas producers.

A major player in the energy trading business in Europe

In a context where demand is constantly changing both through increases and greater complexity, and supply is becoming international and diversified, GDF SUEZ operates on energy markets to:

  • optimize and round out its resources portfolio, comprised mostly of long-term contracts
  • design supply adapted to the needs of key accounts in matters of engineering and multi-energy pricing
  • integrate the increasingly intertwined different energy markets for purposes of gas/electricity arbitrage.
