Electricity production

Facts and figures

In France, the GDF SUEZ Energy France Business Line is:

  • The 2nd leading producer of electricity, selling nearly 30 billion kWh,

  • The 2nd leading player in hydroelectricity with more than 25% of the overall hydroelectric production capacity,

  • The leading player in wind power with an installed generating capacity of more than 240 MW at the end of 2007, i.e. 10% of the French market.

A producer of electricity

The Group wishes to position itself in France as the main challenger to the country’s legacy electricity producer.

Come 2013, GDF SUEZ aims to have an electricity production capacity of 10 GW.

The Group’s key strength is its particularly ecological energy mix, with 70% of renewable energies and a substantial investment in wind power. Many projects currently under construction involve technologies which use renewable energy (wind power, hydro-electric power).

Diversified resources

The Group’s portfolio of electricity production assets comprises:

  • A natural gas combined cycle power plant (DK6, in Dunkirk, France),

  • Wind farms (Maïa Eolis, Erelia, La Compagnie du Vent, CN’air, Nass&Wind, Great),

  • Hydroelectric plants (CNR, SHEM),

  • Drawing rights on nuclear power plants and electricity sourcing contracts.

In order to increase the Group's production capacity, 3 natural gas fired thermal power plants are currently under development at:

  • Fos-sur-Mer, France: the CyCoFos (480 MWe) and CombiGolfe (425 MWe) units, which are due to be commissioned in late 2008 and 2010 respectively,

  • Montoir-de-Bretagne (430 MWe): site preparation works began in December 2007, and the plant is due to be commissioned in early 2010,

  • Saint-Brieuc (220 MWe): the public enquiry will begin in September 2008 and the authorisation to operate the plant is expected to be delivered in early 2009. Construction work should begin in early 2009, with the plant being commissioned in late 2010,

  • Curbans (in France’s Alpes-de-Haute-Provence region): a major photovoltaic solar power project.

What is a combined cycle power plant?

A combined cycle power plant comprises a gas turbine generator whose exhaust gases are fed to a steam boiler. The steam which is produced by the boiler in turn feeds a turbo generator.

Growing reliance on renewable sources of energy

Many construction projects now incorporate technologies which make use of renewable sources of energy (wind, hydroelectric power).
