Electricity production

Beyond France, GDF SUEZ is:

  • No. 5 producer and seller of electricity in Europe,

  • No. 1 producer of electricity in Belgium and the Netherlands,

  • No. 1 private producer of electricity in Brazil and in Thailand,

  • No. 1 independent producer in the world,

  • No. 3 seller to the service and industry sectors in the USA.

Production spread across 4 continents

Outside France, GDF SUEZ produces electricity across the world:

  • Europe (Belgium, Spain, Italy, Netherlands, Portugal, UK, Hungary, Poland, Luxembourg, Germany, etc.),

  • Latin America (Brazil, Chile, Panama, Peru, etc.),

  • North America (including Mexico),

  • Asia (Thailand, Middle East, Turkey, China, Philippines, etc.).

The growing role of renewable energies

The synergies and cross-fertilisation brought about by GDF SUEZ’s diversity of geographical coverage and competencies will make it possible to devise different development models and to create new sources of growth.

Alongside traditional power stations (in particular gas-fuelled plants), GDF SUEZ is focusing on cleaner production processes, with more and more plants generating electricity from renewable energies, through subsidiaries and holdings in:

  • cogeneration (6 plants in Italy with output of 370 MW; 20 units in Thailand generating 995 MW of electricity; 20 plants in North America producing 1,995 MW),

  • wind power (Canada, France, Portugal, Italy, Belgium),

  • hydroelectric power with 10 plants in Brazil (10,653 MW), and plants in the USA, Peru, Chile, Laos,

  • biomass (8 plants in Belgium, in the Netherlands, in Poland and in Brazil).

Electricity production and desalination

In the Middle East, GDF SUEZ has a direct stake in the day-to-day production of more than 11,000 MW of electricity and more than 2 million cubic metres of water.
